The Executive Director of Traffic at the Greater Amman Municipality, Mohammad Al-Jadou, said that the municipality deals with traffic congestion as an urban challenge linked to population growth and the continuous increase in the number of vehicles, pointing out that work is underway to launch a smart traffic platform that allows monitoring movement in various areas of the capital and provides real-time data every two minutes.
Al-Jadou explained that the municipality monitors the road network, intersections, and traffic lights in cooperation with the Traffic Department, through field monitoring teams and the traffic control center which monitors more than 120 traffic lights.
He added that the municipality is working on developing traffic management tools using technology, noting that the new platform will allow monitoring the traffic situation in Amman and tracking congestion and accidents, and it is expected to be launched during the coming days after completing the necessary procedures.
He pointed out that addressing congestion is not limited to establishing bridges, tunnels, and intersections, as solving a problem at one location may transfer it to another. Therefore, since 2015, the municipality has moved toward working on traffic corridors and infrastructure projects, in addition to readjusting the organization of a number of intersections and replacing some roundabouts with traffic lights.
He indicated that these modifications are based on prior traffic studies and aim to improve traffic flow and enhance traffic safety, especially in locations experiencing frequent accidents.
Al-Jadou pointed out that the traffic light control system used in Amman since 2007 relies on cameras and ground sensors, and automatically adjusts signal timings during peak periods according to the volume of traffic in each direction.
