About 44 injured in train derailment in northwestern France

Officials reported that a train carrying about 200 passengers derailed in northwestern France on Friday, injuring 44 people.

French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot stated that the train was traveling between the cities of Rouen and Caen in the Normandy region before it derailed in the Seine-Maritime department.

The Seine-Maritime authorities explained that the train veered off the tracks at around 19:45 (17:45 GMT).

Rouen Public Prosecutor Sébastien Gallois stated that 44 people were injured, including a woman in "critical" condition, while the train driver's test results were negative.

For its part, the National Railway Company (SNCF) emphasized that "the current priority is to take care of the passengers, and then work to ensure the conditions for traffic to return to normal."

The company confirmed that it is working with the police to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
