The Director of the Traffic Department, Brigadier General Raed Al-Assaf, said on Thursday that the traffic accident that occurred on the Desert Highway, in the Sultani area, resulted in the death of 5 people, including a public bus driver and 4 national service conscripts, in addition to the injury of 18 others, including 3 critical injuries and 15 moderate injuries.
Al-Assaf explained that the accident occurred as a result of the public bus, which was transporting a number of national service conscripts heading to their homes in the south, colliding with a freight vehicle, noting that initial investigations showed that the direct cause of the accident was a sudden lane change by the truck driver.
He pointed out that the Public Security Directorate has formed a traffic investigation committee to determine the causes and circumstances of the accident, noting that initial data indicates that the accident was caused by incorrect traffic behavior by the human element.
He stated that the statistical analysis study of traffic accidents issued by the Public Security Directorate for 2025 showed that the human element accounts for about 96 percent of the causes of accidents, compared to causes related to the vehicle or the road.
He pointed out that the work of the Public Security Directorate in the field of traffic is based on plans and programs based on 4 main axes, represented by governance and legislative deterrence, smart monitoring and the use of modern technology, updating and developing infrastructure, in addition to strengthening community partnerships and national awareness.
Al-Assaf emphasized that focusing on human behavior is at the forefront of regulatory and awareness plans to reduce traffic accidents, by developing the performance of traffic departments, strengthening monitoring, and raising the level of traffic awareness among road users.
