The management of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in southeastern Ukraine said on Saturday that Ukrainian shelling over the past few weeks has caused damage to the plant's external power supply equipment and that electricity is currently being supplied from emergency sources.
The management explained in a statement that the situation is under control and is being monitored by plant staff.
The plant, which is the largest in Europe and has six reactors, does not produce any electricity but needs energy supplied through two external lines to keep the nuclear fuel cool.
Russia took control of the plant during the first weeks of the war in 2022, and since then, Moscow and Kyiv have regularly accused each other of launching military operations that threaten nuclear safety.
