Yemeni Government: 5 killed and 16 injured in Houthi attack on Ma'ashiq Palace

The Yemeni government announced, on Thursday evening, that the death toll from the attack launched by the Houthi group on the Ma'ashiq Presidential Palace in the interim capital, Aden, in the south of the country, has risen to 5 killed and 16 injured.

Yemeni Minister of Public Health and Population Qasim Buhaybeh said, in a post on his Facebook account, that "the terrorist attack that targeted the official headquarters of the government in the Ma'ashiq presidential complex resulted in 5 martyrs and 16 wounded."

Buhaybeh explained that the victims were among the security personnel and civilian employees working at the site, without providing further details.

On Thursday afternoon, the Houthi group targeted the Ma'ashiq Presidential Palace in the Crater district of Aden with a number of ballistic missiles, according to a government source and eyewitnesses.

A government source, who requested anonymity to Anadolu Agency, said that the Houthi group targeted the palace with five ballistic missiles, while a number of Yemeni government members were inside at the time of the attack.

The source added at the time that the attack resulted in the death of 3 soldiers from the palace guard, in an initial toll.

Later, the Yemeni government said in a statement that the Houthi group's attack on the Ma'ashiq Presidential Palace would not deter it from "continuing the battle to restore state institutions and end the coup."

This targeting is the first of its kind that the Ma'ashiq Palace has been subjected to since the renewal of clashes between the Houthis and the internationally recognized Yemeni government last July.

Yemen has been witnessing a war since the Houthis took control of the capital, Sanaa, and several governorates in September 2014, before an Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia intervened in March 2015 in support of the internationally recognized Yemeni government.
