World Food Programme reduces its aid in Gaza, depriving 500,000 Palestinians of food

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced its intention to reduce food aid in the Gaza Strip, which will deprive about 500,000 Palestinians of access to it, in light of funding shortages, as winter approaches and families continue to struggle to provide for their basic needs. The program intends to reduce the number of beneficiaries from about 1.6 million to 1.1 million people, according to what the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported from the program.

The program's Acting Executive Director, Carl Skau, said that the reduction in aid is not due to a decrease in needs or an inability to bring food into the Strip, but rather to a lack of funding, warning that cutting aid in the period leading up to winter could exacerbate hunger and threaten the humanitarian gains achieved over the past months.

The measures include reducing the number of food parcels, decreasing the size of flour bags, and cutting the hot meals provided by community kitchens from 250,000 meals per day to 150,000, in addition to reducing the value of cash assistance provided to needy families. Skau called on donors to provide additional funding to avoid worsening food insecurity in Gaza.
