Water security tops national files.. and awareness is the first line of defense

Experts and specialists confirmed that the water situation in Jordan has become at the forefront of national files, and that water security takes precedence over all other files, stressing the need to spread water awareness among citizens, and the importance of facing the challenges experienced by the sector and finding practical solutions for them.

This confirmation came during a training workshop organized by the Jordan Engineers Association, through the Young Engineers Committee and youth committees in the engineering divisions, titled "Jordanian Water Security in Light of Regional Transformations," after His Majesty the King referred to the water situation in his recent speech before the United Nations, and considered it an essential part of the Kingdom's security system, which raised the file to the ranks of national priorities.

The head of the Chemical Young Engineers Committee, Engineer Omar Al-Abadleh, explained that water is closely linked to the economy, security, and development, and has connections to various aspects of life, noting that everyone is aware of the limited water resources in the Kingdom.

Al-Abadleh pointed out that the water sector faces challenges related to local, regional, and international conditions, confirming that youth are not isolated from the nation's issues, that they are a part of them, and that the youth committees in the association organize events around them.

For his part, the head of the Young Engineers Committee in the association, Engineer Ahmed Al-Tawara, indicated that the issue of water has become one of the important files and one of the priorities of Jordanian files.

Al-Tawara cited as evidence the recent speech of His Majesty the King before the United Nations, in which he addressed the water situation and considered it an essential part of the Kingdom's security system.

Former Minister of Water, Dr. Motasem Saidan, confirmed that water is an important file in Jordan, pointing out that the Kingdom has moved in recent years from drought seasons to floods, and that water security remains a fundamental pillar as expressed by His Majesty the King.

He pointed out that the per capita water share is about 61 cubic meters annually, while the global water poverty line is 500 cubic meters, explaining that 40% of water sources are linked to neighboring countries, and that regional events and geopolitical situations are reflected in water strategies, and may sometimes push Jordan to austerity in water use.

He added that in Jordan there are 14 groundwater basins, 10 of which have reached the safe extraction limit, and some have been exceeded by 300%, while only four basins remain within safe limits.

Saidan identified three main challenges: the depletion of water basins, water loss which reaches about 40% at the Kingdom level due to administrative loss, assaults, and thefts, and climate change, calling for work on the awareness file, and confirming that water awareness among citizens is insufficient.
