Universities organize activities to enhance scientific research and innovation

Universities organized a series of activities on Wednesday to enhance scientific research and innovation, develop education and training, employ technology and artificial intelligence, and build scientific partnerships.

At Yarmouk University, the university signed an agreement to establish the "Nizar Abu Jaber Scholarship for Excellence in Geology," aiming to support students in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, encourage scientific excellence, and support deserving students.

The university president, Dr. Malik Al-Sharairi, emphasized the importance of the agreement in supporting students and motivating them to achieve academic excellence, praising Abu Jaber's initiative and his eagerness to support the department's students, and confirming the university's continuation of expanding its community partnerships and providing a supportive educational environment for its students.

For his part, Abu Jaber, a former faculty member in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, expressed his pride in launching the scholarship, confirming that the initiative comes out of a belief in the importance of supporting outstanding students and supporting them in their academic journey, and that investing in students and science is an investment in the future of the nation.

According to the agreement, the scholarship is allocated to Bachelor of Applied Geology students enrolled in the regular program, with three scholarships awarded annually, covering semester registration fees and credit hour fees.

The scholarship requires the student to have completed the required hours according to their academic level, have a cumulative GPA of at least 'very good,' not be receiving another scholarship, have a good conduct and behavior, and submit two letters of recommendation from faculty members, while the scholarship covers the cost of the regular program fees.

The university announced the acceptance of applications at the beginning of the first semester of each year, and the formation of a permanent committee to select the deserving applicants, chaired by the Dean of Student Affairs, with the representative of the second team, the head of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, and the director of the Student Services Department as the secretary.

The committee is responsible for studying the applications and prioritizing applicants according to the approved criteria and recommending the names of the candidates to the university president.

The president of the university's Board of Trustees, Dr. Tayseer Al-Naimat, sponsored the opening of the First International Conference on Sustainable Innovation in Engineering (ICSIE 2026), organized by the Al-Hajjawi Faculty of Technological Engineering, with the participation of a group of specialists and those interested in the fields of engineering, technology, and innovation.

Al-Naimat emphasized that the challenge today is no longer limited to producing knowledge, but in the ability to transform it into practical and sustainable solutions to face global challenges, primarily climate change, water and energy security, and artificial intelligence.

He pointed to the importance of issues related to sustainable development, technological transformation, and youth empowerment, confirming that facing common global challenges requires partnership, innovation, dialogue, and collective responsibility, and that engineering has a doubled responsibility towards humans and society, through the development of sustainable, flexible, smart, and ethically responsible solutions.

For his part, Al-Sharairi said that the conference brings together researchers and experts from various disciplines and local, regional, and international scientific institutions, allowing for the exchange of experiences and knowledge, stressing that investing in humans is one of the most important pillars of the university's mission, and its keenness to provide a stimulating scientific environment for research and creativity.

He explained that the university looks forward to the conference going beyond presenting scientific papers to building effective research partnerships, and transforming the discussions and ideas presented into research projects and scientific cooperation that extends its impact beyond the end of the conference's activities, noting that the diversity of participating research reflects the breadth of knowledge fields and their overlap with the challenges facing societies.

For his part, the president of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) branch in Jordan, Dr. Mousa Al-Akhras, stressed the importance of enhancing cooperation between universities to support the march of education and innovation, appreciating Yarmouk University's initiative to exempt graduate students from participation fees, which contributes to serving scientific research and enabling master's and doctoral students to present outstanding scientific research.

For his part, the conference president, Dr. Hashem Matarneh, confirmed that the conference includes 12 scientific axes covering modern and vital fields, explaining that the scientific committee received more than 790 research papers, of which about 510 were accepted after evaluation, distributed over 24 face-to-face sessions and 38 virtual sessions, with the participation of researchers from 45 countries.

At Al-Balqa Applied University, Dr. Alaa Al-Ma'ani completed two research projects in the field of linguistics during her research visit to the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics in the Faculty of Modern and Intermediate Languages and Linguistics at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, in cooperation with Dr. Dora Alexopoulou, an associate professor at the University of Cambridge.

Cambridge University confirmed in an official certificate issued by the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics that Dr. Al-Ma'ani was a visiting researcher in the department, successfully completing two post-doctoral research projects, supported by the Scientific Research and Innovation Support Fund in Jordan, and her research efforts resulted in the preparation of two joint scientific research papers in preparation for their publication.

The first project dealt with the "Role of resumptive pronouns in the immediate processing of sentences in Arabic," while the second dealt with the "Acquisition of determination in Arabic relative clauses by learners of English and French."

Dr. Alexopoulou praised the research level of Dr. Al-Ma'ani, confirming that her research visit was an important scientific opportunity for cooperation and exchange of research ideas, and that the results of the two projects provided important contributions to understanding language processing and acquisition processes, especially those related to Jordanian Arabic and Modern Standard Arabic.

She explained that Dr. Al-Ma'ani's research included identifying a number of important hypotheses and designing psycholinguistic experiments to test specific predictions, noting that her results contribute to expanding the current understanding of language processing and acquisition mechanisms, and enriching existing scientific theories in this field.

In science and technology, the Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences at the university organized an event entitled "Smart Virtual Reality in Medicine and Health: A New Vision for Teaching and Training Methods," aiming to enhance the use of virtual reality technologies in teaching and training methods in medical and health specialties, and to raise the readiness of faculty members to benefit from modern educational technologies.

The event included practical presentations and training sessions that addressed the educational and training potential of virtual reality technologies and their applications in medical training and clinical case simulation, in addition to reviewing interactive models that illustrate the role of these technologies in developing learning and simulation environments.

The dean of the faculty, Dr. Salim Bani Hani, emphasized the importance of keeping pace with technical developments and employing modern digital solutions, especially virtual reality technologies, in developing health education and training methods and enhancing simulation and interactive learning environments.

For his part, the event coordinator, Dr. Alaa Ashour, explained that the event comes within the framework of enhancing the use of technology and artificial intelligence in health education and training, and keeping pace with the rapid changes in the technical field.
