Alvaro Lario, President of the UN International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), said that the impact of disruptions in shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is already beginning to appear in agricultural crops, threatening to reduce agricultural production and drive up food prices.
He added that current stocks of fertilizers and fuel initially mitigated the shock, but the continued uncertainty has led to a more cautious approach to farming and reduced fertilizer use, adding that rising fuel costs are also affecting mechanized harvesting operations.
