UNICEF: 79,000 Children Displaced in Western Yemen in Less Than a Month

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) announced on Friday that approximately 79,000 children have been displaced in western Yemen within less than a month due to the military escalation between government forces and the Houthis.

UNICEF stated in a report carried by news agencies that the renewed conflict and changing frontlines have deepened an already dire humanitarian crisis.

It added that the battles in the provinces of Taiz, Al Hudaydah, the western coast, and surrounding areas have forced families to flee again, leaving behind their homes, properties, and sources of livelihood.

UNICEF reported that between September 3 and September 28, more than 145,000 people were displaced, including about 79,000 children.

It warned that the recent escalation coincides with a difficult humanitarian situation in a country where humanitarian needs are among the highest in the world.

UNICEF pointed out that over 12 million children in Yemen need humanitarian assistance, while health and education services have been damaged due to the conflict.

It explained that there are families living in crowded camps with limited access to clean water, healthcare, and other essential services, and many of these families arrived with only the clothes they were wearing.

UNICEF emphasized that it continues to support affected communities, while calling for ensuring the safe delivery of humanitarian aid to the most needy children.

Yemen witnessed in the past few hours the widest military escalation in three weeks between government forces and the Houthi group.
