UK: We will not stand idly by while the two-state solution is undermined

British government spokesperson Jocelyn Woolar said on Thursday that the two-state solution is "the only way to bring peace to the region," affirming that London "will not stand idly by" in the face of attempts to undermine the possibility of establishing a Palestinian state.

In an interview with Al-Mamlaka channel, Woolar added that the United Kingdom considers the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories to be "illegal," noting that the measures recently taken by London are based on this position and aim to protect the two-state solution and bring about change on the ground.

She explained that Britain currently sees a "serious attempt" on the ground to undermine the possibility of a Palestinian state, which in turn undermines the possibility of achieving peace, reaffirming the UK's commitment to the two-state solution and to taking concrete measures to protect it.

Woolar spoke of a package of British measures, including a ban on imports from illegal settlements, a ban on economic activities within the UK that could contribute to illegal settlement expansion, and the use of a sanctions regime against those who contribute to settlement expansion or commit acts of violence against Palestinians.

She emphasized that the British move is not being taken unilaterally, pointing to London's coordination with France and Canada, with the support of countries in the region, including Jordan.

- Humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza

Regarding the Gaza Strip, Woolar described what happened in the strip as "catastrophic in every sense of the word," noting that more than 70,000 Palestinians have been martyred, including 20,000 children, and affirming that Britain wants to see accountability for what happened in Gaza.

She said that Britain considers the peace plan to be the framework for establishing peace and ensuring a transition to a new phase in the Gaza Strip, allowing the people of the strip to restore their normal lives, stressing that the current priority is the implementation of the plan.

She added that the United Kingdom will continue to support efforts aimed at implementing the peace plan alongside its partners.

Woolar pointed to the existence of intensive international coordination and efforts regarding Gaza, reaffirming the pivotal role played by Jordan and the coordination between the United Kingdom and Jordan on this file.

She noted that cooperation with Jordan contributed last year to the arrival of more than 100 students from the Gaza Strip who received scholarships to study in the United Kingdom.

She emphasized the need for further cooperation and the mobilization of efforts to move to a new phase that allows the people of Gaza stability and a return to a normal life in peace and security.

On the humanitarian side, Woolar said that the United Kingdom will allocate 88 million pounds sterling this year for life-saving aid, noting at the same time that the challenge lies in delivering this aid to those in need.

She added that the restrictions imposed on the delivery of aid are still ongoing, confirming that Britain will continue to work alongside its partners to exert pressure on the Israeli government to lift these restrictions and open all crossings.

She stressed the necessity of enabling humanitarian organizations, including the United Nations and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), to perform their essential role in delivering aid.
