Two Jordanian students win top positions in the World English Olympiad for non-native speakers

The Jordanian flag was raised amidst cheers of joy at the Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti in the Italian city of Spoleto after Jordanian student Muhammad Saleh Habab reached first place in the most difficult category (S5) and student Maya Christo Al-Abou reached second place in category (S1) in the 14th edition of the World English Olympiad for non-native speakers, surpassing more than 105,000 participants in the competition from countries around the world and a journey whose competitions lasted for about 10 months.

Habab told the Jordanian News Agency (Petra) that he was passionate about reading books in general and English in particular in all disciplines, and that since the age of five, he has been diligent in reading, which helped him master the English language fluently, and he continued to participate in this competition over the past years until he achieved his dream of winning first place.

He added that he participated in the competition twice before, and in one of them he got third place and was awarded a bronze medal. He continued to follow and read, achieving his dream of wearing a gold medal and standing on stage in front of thousands of participants. He explained that reading gave him self-confidence, increased his language wealth, and increased his knowledge, as books were his asset in life and form a large part of his daily life, as the book does not leave his hand except when sleeping.

For her part, Al-Abou pointed out that participating in the international English Olympiad "Hipo" came at the end of an early passion for language and reading, where she went through all the qualifying stages for the finals, starting from the preliminary stage at school and at the national level, then to the continental level and ending with the final stage, which brings together the elite of qualifiers from different participating countries.

She added that her results were outstanding in all stages and she achieved outstanding marks that qualified her to move from one stage to another, reaching the final stage held in Italy, and this achievement in itself was the result of a journey of diligence, perseverance, and excellence, before her participation was crowned with her obtaining second place globally and a silver medal.

She added that she represented Jordan in this Olympiad in the S1 category and raised the Jordanian flag high in this international forum, amidst the participation of more than 70 countries, with the participation of more than 108,000 students.

Muhammad Habab's father said that his son's achievement came after a competitive journey that began in Jordan, where he qualified for the continental round in Baku, Azerbaijan, and achieved first place there, securing his place in the global finals held from September 28 to 30, 2026, with the participation of about 240 students and students from more than 60 countries.

He added that this year's edition saw the participation of more than 108,000 students from around the world, making Muhammad, according to the results of the 2026 edition, the first Jordanian student to achieve first place globally in the competition.

He pointed out that this achievement is a distinguished milestone in his career; it was his third participation in the competition after obtaining third place globally and a bronze medal in 2024, returning this year to achieve first place in his category.

Muhammad's mother pointed out that her son's achievement is a source of pride for Jordan, a model of the ability of Jordanian students to compete and excel in international forums, and an incentive for Jordanian youth to participate in global competitions and achieve more achievements that raise the name of the Kingdom.

She pointed out that children need continuous care and the development and enhancement of their talents, which is what she did throughout these years, raising the name of Jordan in this international forum, which shows the value of the Jordanian individual in international forums.

She expressed thanks to the Royal Jordanian Airlines, which provided sponsorship for Muhammad in his trip to the finals, and such sponsorship had a great impact on them and on Muhammad himself, who was able to prove his abilities in reading, listening, speaking, and writing in English.

As for Maya's mother, she said that since her early years, Maya, from the seventh grade at the Rosary School in Marj Al-Hamam, had a special passion for reading and listening to stories, and she used to visit book fairs since childhood and always chose the books herself, so she was able to read a large number of books of great size and content at an early age, with a noticeable passion for reading and knowledge.

She added that the family was keen to encourage her and support this passion, and to follow her development year after year, where they noticed her fast reading and continuous progress in the language, and they continued to choose meaningful and beneficial cartoon series that help her develop her language skills, especially in English, in a fun way suitable for her age.

She emphasized that it was not only the family's role present in Maya's journey, as her school also played an important role in enhancing her love of reading; the school encouraged its students to read throughout the year, which made the book a fundamental part of Maya's daily life, and she constantly borrowed books from the school library, borrowing more than one book at a time, to continue her journey of reading and learning with great passion.

She pointed out that even on occasions and holidays, books were the dearest gifts to her heart, and her joy was greatest when she found a new book among her gifts and added it to her small library, starting a new journey with it, and this early passion for reading and language, along with perseverance, diligence, and continuous support from the family and school, contributed to building her scientific and linguistic personality, and paved the way for her to achieve an international achievement that is honorable for Jordan.

She pointed to her pride in the role played by the Jordanian education system in encouraging students to learn and excel, supporting their talents and abilities, and consolidating the values of reading and knowledge as a basis for building the student's personality and expanding his horizons, as such achievements reflect the importance of the integration of efforts of the family, school, and educational environment in discovering the talents of our sons and daughters, encouraging them to develop their skills, and participating in scientific, cultural, and competitions that open new horizons for them and give them confidence in their ability to compete and excel at the Arab and international levels.

The Director General of the Latent Sensory Response Company and the accredited agent for the Hipo World English Olympiad in Jordan, Othman Al-Khawaja, said that this competition is an international competition based in Italy and held annually, and it has been established for 14 years and thousands of students participate in it annually, and last year 2026, 105,000 students and students participated in this competition, and Jordan proved its effectiveness and presence in this competition with this level and results every year, achieving outstanding results and obtaining advanced positions, but this year it achieved the first positions.

He pointed out that the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development contributes effectively in encouraging students and children to participate in the competition, by adopting and disseminating it to all schools, in addition to providing an opportunity for the local community to participate.
