Trump: US Interest Rates Should Be the Lowest in the World

US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that US interest rates should be the lowest compared to countries around the world, ahead of the Federal Reserve's monetary policy meeting scheduled for the coming days.

Asked if he expected the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates on Wednesday, Trump told reporters on the sidelines of the Irish Open Golf Championship that he had no knowledge of it, adding, "The interest rate in the country should be the lowest among the world's countries," regardless of what the central bank's data on inflation and the economy indicates.

The Federal Reserve meeting comes less than a week after the consumer price index recorded its largest increase in four months last Friday, which reinforced expectations that the central bank will raise interest rates. The index, which is a key measure of core inflation, is issued by the Department of Labor.

Federal Reserve officials meet just weeks before the midterm elections for Congress, which will determine whether Republicans maintain their slim majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Recent opinion polls by Reuters/Ipsos show that rising interest rates may fuel voter concerns about the affordability of living costs.

Trump's popularity has declined amid ongoing inflation, as the US President believes that the interest rates approved by the Federal Reserve have benefited other countries at the expense of the United States.

Trump said, "I know more about the equations than anyone else, and thanks to our best credit rating in the world, we are enriching other countries"

Although Trump has been critical of former Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, he has shown greater support for the leadership of the Council since Kevin Warsh, whom Trump personally selected for the position, took office earlier this year. However, Trump has been more vocal about his demands recently.

Trump wrote on social media two weeks ago, "Lower the interest rate or I will stop trading with countries with which we have a trade deficit"

Kevin Hassett, Director of the National Economic Council, said in an interview with the Fox News Sunday program that Trump "will defend Kevin Warsh's independence above all else," regardless of what the Federal Reserve does regarding interest rates.

However, Hassett also emphasized Trump's personal preferences, saying, "If interest rates are raised... I am confident that he will not be happy about it at all"
