US President Donald Trump on Monday indicated that 'threats' targeting US bombers stationed in the United Kingdom were behind their withdrawal from Fairford in southwest England.
Trump told reporters at the White House 'There were threats, so instead of leaving them vulnerable to enemies... we moved them a little, not far.'
For his part, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Monday that Washington remains confident in the security of all its bases, following the arrest of five men near a British airbase on suspicion of planning terrorist acts.
The United States confirmed on Sunday that it had withdrawn all its bombers from the Royal Air Force base in Fairford after last month's security incident, which remains unclear, led to the opening of a counter-terrorism investigation.
Police were called to the base in southwest England on September 27 after being informed of 'suspicious' activity by a group of men and several vans.
Following this, 85 homes near the airbase, which the United States used to launch strikes on Iran, were evacuated.
