US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that there has been 'significant progress' towards establishing a US military base in Poland, after Warsaw announced that it is in talks with Washington on the matter.
Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform, 'Thanks to the bold leadership of my friend Karol Nawrotzki, President of Poland, significant progress is being made towards establishing a US Army base in Poland.'
He added, 'If that happens, the location will be announced very soon.'
Poland, which shares borders with both Russia and Ukraine, and is a member of NATO and the European Union, announced in August that it is in talks with Washington about establishing a permanent US base on its territory.
For his part, Nawrotzki said via X, 'We are ready to continue our efforts to strengthen our defense cooperation: seriously, responsibly, and always together.'
He added, 'I can assure you that the Polish government will do its utmost to provide the best possible location for the US Army base.'
Currently, about 10,000 US soldiers are stationed in Poland. Washington announced this summer that it has started a formal review of its military presence in Europe, with the aim of pushing European countries to take 'primary responsibility for their conventional defense'.
Washington has criticized European countries that refused to allow US forces to use NATO bases on their territory during the war with Iran.
US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth also threatened to reduce his country's contribution to the NATO budget if some countries refuse to fulfill the commitments they made during the NATO summit in The Hague last year.
During that summit, member countries pledged to allocate at least five percent of their gross domestic product to security spending by 2035, including 3.5 percent exclusively for military spending.
