US President Donald Trump nominated Texas Republican Representative Wesley Hunt for the position of Ambassador to Saudi Arabia on Monday, thereby filling a vacancy since Trump began his second term in January 2025.
Hunt is a veteran of the US military who served in Iraq and Saudi Arabia, and will not run again for the House of Representatives after a failed attempt to win a seat in the Senate.
If the Senate approves his nomination, Hunt will head to Riyadh at a time when the war on Iran has raised fears of a broader conflict, and Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen have launched attacks on Saudi Arabia.
