A senior U.S. official said on Friday that U.S. President Donald Trump will hold a meeting with Venezuela's interim President Delcy Rodriguez in New York on Tuesday, marking the first direct meeting between the two leaders since Washington ousted former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in January.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz told journalists at a press conference via telephone that Trump's meeting with Rodriguez, who was previously Maduro's deputy, will take place on the sidelines of a reception hosted by the Republican President.
Waltz said, "The President will host a reception for member states' leaders of the United Nations General Assembly. There, a side meeting will be held with Venezuela's interim President Rodriguez." He did not provide any details on the topics they might discuss.
The Venezuelan Ministry of Communications, which handles press inquiries on behalf of the government, has not yet responded to a request for comment.
Last month, the United States and Venezuela signed an energy agreement allowing the U.S. partial control over Venezuela's vast oil reserves, betting that U.S. companies can help revive the deteriorating energy sector in the South American country.
