Trump: Iran has been severely punished and will never possess a nuclear weapon

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the blockade imposed by his country on Iran was "very effective," adding: "(Iran) has been severely punished. We have truly taught them a very harsh lesson."

This came in a speech delivered by Trump during an event at the White House, in which he touched upon how to restructure the American steel industry following the September 11 attacks.

In his speech, in which he remembered the victims of the September 11 attacks, Trump affirmed that his country is making every effort to prevent such attacks from happening again.

He added that Iran will not be able in any way to possess a nuclear weapon.

He continued: "We are currently at war because there is a country that wants to obtain a nuclear weapon. They came very close to that, but they no longer have any chance of obtaining it. (Iran) will never possess a nuclear weapon."

Trump claimed that the naval blockade imposed on Iran was "very successful," adding: "(Iran) has been severely punished. We have truly taught them a very harsh lesson."

Trump pointed out that the blockade imposed by the US Navy has significantly facilitated the passage of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz.

On February 28, the United States and Israel began a war on Iran, which responded with attacks targeting Israel and American targets in the region, before the confrontations escalated again during the following months.

On June 18, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding regarding freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, but its implementation faltered due to disputes related to the security of the strait.

Between July 8 and 24, the United States resumed attacks on Iran, and Tehran responded by targeting American military facilities and equipment in Arab countries.
