US President Donald Trump said he has approved new fuel efficiency standards that eliminate the electric vehicle mandate set by his predecessor Joe Biden's administration.
Trump added in a social media post on Saturday, "These new standards will end the waste in the American auto industry. This means lower prices, saving families thousands of dollars when buying a new, beautiful, and safe car."
Trump's administration last month said it would soon announce new, much less stringent fuel efficiency standards, reversing the previous administration's approach aimed at pushing automakers to produce more fuel-efficient vehicles.
Under Biden, the US administration sought to encourage automakers to expand production of electric vehicles to comply with increasing fuel efficiency standards.
According to the Department of Transportation estimates, the new standards will reduce the cost of new cars, but will increase fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions over decades.
Trump's efforts come as US drivers face a sharp rise in fuel prices since the outbreak of the US-Israeli war with Iran at the end of February.
In December, the Trump administration proposed retroactively adjusting the fuel efficiency standard for 2022 models to reduce it, and then increase it by 0.25% to 0.5% annually until 2031.
