His Majesty King Abdullah II opens the third ordinary session of the 20th Parliament today, Monday, with the Speech from the Throne, in which His Majesty outlines the priorities of the next phase for the Jordanian state.
The Senate holds its first session of the third ordinary session immediately following the Speech from the Throne to elect the first deputy speaker of the Senate, the second deputy, and the assistants.
Sources in the Senate stated that Senator Dr. Abdullah Ensour will be elected as First Deputy Speaker, and Senator Dr. Hani Mulki as Second Deputy Speaker by consensus, and the assistants will also be elected by consensus.
The Senate will also elect a committee to draft the response to the Speech from the Throne.
The House of Representatives holds its first session immediately after the Senate session, presided over by the most senior deputy if he is not a candidate for the speaker position.
Information indicates that MP Mousa Al-Wahsh from the National Ummah Party bloc will preside over the opening session, as the most senior MP is Majhem Al-Saqour, who has announced his candidacy for the speakership of the House of Representatives, and Al-Wahsh follows Al-Saqour in seniority.
The House of Representatives elects the speaker of the House and the members of the Permanent Bureau in its first session.
Three candidates are competing for the speakership of the House of Representatives: MP Dr. Ibrahim Al-Tarawneh, the candidate of the National Charter Party bloc, who has become the consensus candidate for four parliamentary blocs: "National Charter, Initiative, National Union and Centrist and Reform Parties, and Azm."
Competing with Dr. Al-Tarawneh for the presidency are MP Majhem Al-Saqour from the National Charter bloc and MP Suleiman Al-Zabin from the National Union and Centrist and Reform Parties bloc, who have announced their intention to continue running for the speaker position despite the announcement of the consensus.
Representatives of four blocs—the National Charter, Initiative, National Union and Centrist and Reform Parties, and the Azm bloc—along with the secretaries-general of these parties, announced last Thursday their consensus on the speakership of the House of Representatives and the members of the Permanent Bureau.
These four blocs confirmed that the National Charter bloc candidate, Dr. Ibrahim Al-Tarawneh, would be the consensus candidate for the speakership of the House of Representatives for these four blocs. They also agreed that the Initiative bloc candidate, MP Ahmed Al-Hamaisat, would be the consensus candidate for the position of First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, that the Azm bloc candidate, MP Ibrahim Al-Jabour, would be their candidate for the position of Second Deputy, and they agreed that the positions of assistants would go to the National Union and Centrist and Reform Parties bloc. Sources expect these to be held by MP Rania Abu Rumman and MP Najma Al-Hawawsha.
For his part, MP Mutaz Abu Rumman announced the candidacy of MP Ayatullah Freihat for the position of First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, despite the consensus.
Also running in the elections for the position of Second Deputy are MP Mohammad Al-Ghuwairi and MP Raed Al-Rabaa Al-Dhahrawi. Additionally, the National Ummah Party bloc announced the candidacy of MP Malik Al-Tahrawi for the position of assistant to the speaker.
