The King inaugurates the 3rd ordinary session of Parliament with the Speech from the Throne... tomorrow

His Majesty King Abdullah II will inaugurate, tomorrow, Monday, the third ordinary session of the Parliament, with the High Speech from the Throne, in which His Majesty will set the priorities of the next phase for the Jordanian state.

The Senate will hold its first session in the third ordinary session, immediately following the High Speech from the Throne, to elect the First Deputy Speaker of the Senate, the Second Deputy, and the assistants.

Sources in the Senate said that Senator Dr. Abdullah Ensour will be elected as the first deputy speaker, and Senator Dr. Hani Mulki as the second deputy speaker, by consensus, and the assistants will also be elected by consensus.

The Senate will also elect a committee to respond to the High Speech from the Throne.

The House of Representatives will hold its first session, immediately after the Senate session, chaired by the eldest member of the House, provided he is not a candidate for the position of Speaker.

Information indicates that MP Musa Al-Wahsh, from the Ummah Party bloc, will chair the opening session, as the eldest MP in the House is Majhem Al-Saqour, who announced his candidacy for the speakership of the House of Representatives, and Al-Wahsh comes after Al-Saqour in seniority.

The House of Representatives will elect the Speaker of the House and the members of the Permanent Bureau in its first session.

Competing for the speakership of the House of Representatives, until today, are three candidates: MP Dr. Ibrahim Al-Tarawneh, the candidate of the Mithaq Party bloc, who has become the consensus candidate for four parliamentary blocs: "Mithaq, Initiative, National Union and Centrist and Reform Parties, and Azm," whose total number of MPs is 100 out of 138, the total members of the House of Representatives.

Competing with Al-Tarawneh for the speakership are MP Majhem Al-Saqour, from the Mithaq bloc, and MP Suleiman Al-Zabin, from the National Union and Centrist and Reform Parties bloc, both of whom announced their continuation in running for the Speaker's position, despite the announcement of the consensus.

Representatives of four blocs, namely Mithaq, Initiative, National Union and Centrist and Reform Parties, and Azm, and the general secretaries of these parties, had announced last Thursday their consensus on the speakership of the House of Representatives and the members of the Permanent Bureau.

These blocs confirmed that the candidate of the National Mithaq bloc, Dr. Ibrahim Al-Tarawneh, would be the consensus candidate for the speakership of the House of Representatives for these blocs. They also agreed that the candidate of the Initiative bloc, MP Ahmed Al-Hameisat, would be the consensus candidate for the position of First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, and that the candidate of the Azm bloc, MP Ibrahim Al-Jbour, would be its candidate for the position of Second Deputy. It was also agreed that the position of assistants would go to the National Union and Centrist and Reform Parties bloc, and sources expected it to go to MP Rania Abu Rumman and MP Najma Al-Hawawsheh.

For his part, MP Moataz Abu Rumman announced the nomination of MP Ayatollah Freihat for the position of First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, despite the consensus.

His Majesty King Abdullah II had issued a High Royal Decree calling for the Parliament to convene for its third ordinary session on the second of next month.

The Constitution stipulates, in Article 78, the following: "The King shall call the Parliament to meet in its ordinary session on the first day of October of each year, and if the mentioned day is an official holiday, then on the first day that follows that is not an official holiday, provided that the King may postpone by a Royal Decree published in the Official Gazette the meeting of the Parliament to a date determined in the Royal Decree, provided that the duration of the postponement does not exceed two months."

The House of Representatives elects a speaker at the beginning of each ordinary session, in accordance with Article 69 of the Constitution, which states: "The House of Representatives shall elect at the start of the ordinary session a speaker for a period of one solar year, and he may be re-elected."
