Parliamentary sources expected that four parliamentary blocs would agree on a single candidate for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The parliamentary sources stated that the "Al-Mithaq, Mubadara, Azm, and the Centrist and Reform Parties" blocs are moving towards consensus on choosing one figure from among the candidates for the presidency of the House of Representatives, to be a consensus candidate for these blocs, which have a total of 100 deputies out of the 138 members of the House of Representatives.
The House of Representatives is witnessing intensive movement within its corridors among representatives of the four parliamentary blocs to reach an agreement on the figure who will occupy the presidency seat in the third ordinary session, which is considered, according to the constitution, the penultimate ordinary session.
The sources said that the agenda of the third ordinary session of the National Assembly is crowded with important legislation that has a direct impact on the lives and livelihoods of citizens, most notably the amendment of the Social Security Law, which is currently in the custody of the Parliamentary Labor Committee, which had conducted long and in-depth dialogues with all spectra of Jordanian society, specialists, the government, Social Security officials, popular and economic activities, the three production parties, political parties, and civil society institutions, with the aim of listening to their observations on the draft law sent by the government to the House of Representatives. However, the discussion of the amended draft was postponed until the government sends answers to the questions and recommendations of the Parliamentary Labor Committee.
The agenda of the ordinary session also includes discussing the draft state general budget law for the year 2027, which also requires time and long discussions by the Finance Committee before the budget is approved under the dome.
The sources expect that the end of next week will witness discussions among representatives of the parliamentary blocs regarding the name of the consensus candidate for the presidency of the House of Representatives.
The sources said that after agreeing on the figure of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the four blocs will discuss the possibility of reaching a consensus on the positions of the First Deputy Speaker and the Second Deputy Speaker.
The parliamentary sources confirmed that the positions of the Permanent Office, whether the First Deputy Speaker, the Second Deputy Speaker, or the assistants, are also linked to the understandings between the blocs regarding the position of the Speaker.
His Majesty King Abdullah II issued a Royal Decree summoning the National Assembly to convene for its third ordinary session on the second of next month.
The Constitution, in Article (78), states: "The King shall summon the National Assembly to meet in its ordinary session on the first day of October of each year, and if the mentioned day is an official holiday, then on the first day following it that is not an official holiday, provided that the King may postpone, by a Royal Decree published in the Official Gazette, the meeting of the National Assembly to a date specified in the Royal Decree, provided that the postponement period does not exceed two months."
The House of Representatives elects a speaker at the beginning of each ordinary session, according to Article (69) of the Constitution, which states: "The House of Representatives shall elect at the beginning of the ordinary session a speaker for a period of one solar year, and he may be re-elected."
