The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced on Wednesday that the European Union will gather the leading actors in the field of artificial intelligence in support of the sector's efforts to slow down the most dangerous models.
Von der Leyen said, "I will invite leading and advanced laboratories to discuss ways to support the current efforts being made by the sector to limit competition," also promising cooperation with like-minded countries "such as Canada and the United Kingdom."
Von der Leyen also suggested that Canada, which seeks to strengthen its convergence with Europe, could become the "first partner member" of the European Union, during a speech she gave to the European Parliament in the presence of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Von der Leyen told Mark Carney, who was invited to Strasbourg to attend her annual speech on the state of the Union, "We want to elevate relations with Canada to the highest possible level (...) and therefore I would like to work with you to explore the possibility of Canada becoming the first partner member of the European Union."
