UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated on Wednesday that "global coordination" on artificial intelligence is "indispensable," amid calls to strengthen regulatory frameworks for this sector.
"Governments must assume their responsibilities," Guterres said at a press conference. "The first responsibility of any government is to protect its citizens, including from threats associated with artificial intelligence."
He pointed out that "taking action at the national level is essential, but global coordination is also indispensable," noting that "artificial intelligence does not stop at national borders, and neither do the risks it entails."
He indicated that this topic will be a "key focus of discussion" among various leaders who will meet next week in New York for the UN General Assembly.
Calls to tighten regulations governing the development of artificial intelligence are increasing following a series of incidents and warnings issued by a large number of industry pioneers.
OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, announced that it is working with Anthropic, the producer of the Claude model, and Google, the developer of Gemini, to establish a body to oversee AI risks, amid growing calls to slow the pace of its development.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Wednesday that the European Union will bring together key players in the field of artificial intelligence to support industry efforts aimed at slowing the development of the most dangerous models.
