Calls for an International Framework to Keep Up with the Rapid Development of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence and robotics expert Dr. Ahmed Zuhair Al-Rjoub, in a statement to the program 'Pulse of Opinion' on 'Al-Rai', called for the establishment of an international legislative framework to regulate the use of artificial intelligence technologies, in light of their accelerating development and expanding use in various sectors.

Al-Rjoub said that artificial intelligence has become one of the factors of strength at the national level, in addition to being an important economic resource, noting that the rapid development of smart algorithms has enabled machines to perform many traditional functions.

He explained that the advanced uses of artificial intelligence impose the need for clear legislation and regulations that keep pace with this development, pointing out that talk of absolute machine domination over humans is still premature.

He pointed out that the use of artificial intelligence technologies in military fields, cyber attacks, and social media platforms may have wide-ranging effects, calling for the establishment of an international charter that sets guidelines for their use and limits their employment in areas that may threaten humans or the environment.

Al-Rjoub asserted that artificial intelligence can contribute, when used responsibly, to improving performance, increasing productivity, and saving time and effort, while warning of the risks that may result from its use for hostile purposes.

These statements come in conjunction with the call by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates to impose protective measures on artificial intelligence technologies that go beyond self-regulation, and his demand for governments and law enforcement agencies to participate in establishing the necessary guarantees and oversight mechanisms.
