The members of the UN Security Council condemned, on Thursday, the continuous and escalating attacks launched by the Houthis against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, including attacks that targeted civil aviation and energy infrastructure, resulting in civilian deaths and injuries.
In their statement, the Council members also reiterated their condemnation of the continued Houthi attacks and threats against commercial shipping in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab, and stressed the importance of maintaining the safety of commercial vessels and their crews.
Security Council presidential statements are issued with the approval of all members and in the name of the members, not in the name of the Council.
The Security Council members stressed the importance of the full implementation of Resolution 2216 of 2015 and subsequent resolutions, and called for practical cooperation, including with the Government of Yemen, to prevent the Houthis from obtaining weapons, related materiel, technical assistance, training, financing, and other forms of assistance related to military activities necessary to launch further attacks.
The Council members demanded that the Houthis immediately cease their military escalation and attacks targeting civilians and civilian objects, and reaffirmed the Security Council's support for the Government of Yemen and its members' strong commitment to the unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Yemen.
They stressed that sustainable peace in Yemen cannot be achieved through violence, coercion, or the use of force.
