Saudi Arabia: Houthis rejected a request from Riyadh to meet in the Sultanate of Oman

An official at the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused Iran on Thursday of encouraging the Houthis to escalate their recent attacks against the Kingdom, stressing that Iran continues to "arm, train, and support" the Houthis in Yemen.

Saudi Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Public Diplomacy, Raed Krimly, told reporters during a video briefing, "We believe the escalation carried out by the Houthis in this latest phase of the conflict is being encouraged by Iran."

He added that Iran "continues to arm, train, and support the Houthi militia, in violation of UN Security Council resolutions."

Krimly confirmed that Riyadh has sought to reach a diplomatic solution with the Houthis in Yemen while maintaining communication with Iran, but he considered that Tehran is unwilling to reach a solution.

He said, "We continue to communicate directly with Iran," adding, "In general, it does not seem so far that the Iranians are capable of making the necessary concessions to reach a solution."

He confirmed that the Houthis had rejected "in recent weeks" a request from Riyadh to meet in the Sultanate of Oman with the aim of de-escalating between the two sides.

Krimly pointed out that the last contact with the Houthis was "when the meeting was requested a few weeks ago," noting that "direct channels of communication with the Houthis are being maintained."

Krimly accused the Houthis of refusing to sit at the negotiating table and insisting on escalation.

For more than 10 days, Saudi Arabia has been subjected to near-daily attacks carried out by the Houthis using missiles and drones, the most violent of which was an attack on Riyadh airport that resulted in 12 deaths and more than 300 injuries, the most violent in the Kingdom in over a decade.

Against the backdrop of the war in the Middle East, a truce that had been in effect in Yemen since 2022 between the Houthis and the Yemeni government forces collapsed in July.
