A 21-year-old woman was killed and 3 others were injured as a result of a Russian airstrike that targeted the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, at dawn on Monday, causing damage to a subway station.
According to Reuters, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced via the Telegram app that the Russian attack damaged a metro station located on the left bank of the Ukrainian capital.
Klitschko confirmed the death of a 21-year-old woman and the injury of 3 others, without providing further details regarding the nature of the injuries or the extent of the damage to the station.
In initial reports, Ukrainian authorities did not disclose the name of the damaged metro station, or whether the attack had disrupted train traffic.
Ongoing military escalation
The attack comes amid continued military escalation between Russia and Ukraine, with an exchange of airstrikes and drone attacks that have affected energy and infrastructure facilities in both countries.
The Ukrainian capital has been subjected to repeated Russian attacks since the outbreak of the war in February 2022, while Kyiv's subway stations are also used as shelters for residents during air raid alerts.
It is not yet clear whether the station damaged in the latest attack was housing people who had taken shelter there during the raid, or whether the victims were hit inside or in the vicinity of the station.
Peace efforts amid continued fighting
The attack coincides with American diplomatic moves to end the war, amid disagreements over the terms of a settlement and the pressure exerted on Moscow.
US President Donald Trump confirmed on Sunday that he does not want to take steps that might push Russia to withdraw from peace negotiations with Ukraine.
Trump said in a post on his "Truth Social" platform that he is making progress in negotiation efforts, emphasizing his desire to keep Moscow at the negotiating table.
In a related development, The Wall Street Journal revealed on Sunday that Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed holding a trilateral summit next month, bringing him together with Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, to discuss ending the war in Ukraine, without the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The newspaper quoted informed sources as saying that the Russian proposal aims to reach a settlement that serves Moscow's interests, taking advantage of the improved relations between Putin and Trump.
While these political maneuvers continue, the latest raid on Kyiv confirms that military operations have not ceased, at a time when Ukrainian authorities have not yet announced the final toll of the damage to the metro station.
