Palestine calls for an urgent UN Security Council session - Details

The Palestinian Presidency has directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates and the State of Palestine's mission to the United Nations to request an urgent session of the UN Security Council. It also called for immediate action to implement practical measures to provide international protection for Palestinians, in light of the dangerous and accelerating escalation of attacks by settlers and Israeli occupation forces, and the targeting of Palestinian cities, villages, and camps, which threatens their lives, security, and property, and pushes the situation toward further deterioration and instability.

The Palestinian Presidency affirmed on Friday that the escalation of settler attacks, coinciding with Israeli military incursions, killings, destruction, and forced displacement, reflects the gravity of the phase the Palestinian people are going through. This necessitates urgent international intervention to take concrete steps to stop these attacks and put an end to the ongoing violations against Palestinian citizens throughout the occupied Palestinian territory.

The official spokesperson for the Palestinian Presidency, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, said that the UN Security Council must assume its legal and political responsibilities and act urgently to ensure international protection for the Palestinian people, stop settler attacks and the operations of the occupation forces, and take deterrent measures to prevent the continuation of these violations.

Abu Rudeineh pointed out that the recording of 19 settler attacks since Friday morning, which targeted farmers, olive pickers, and their property, and included the burning of trees and vehicles, the uprooting of dozens of olive trees, the theft of livestock and crops, and assaults on Palestinians while preventing them from reaching their lands, constitutes a dangerous indicator of the widening scope of these attacks and their direct targeting of Palestinian lives and livelihoods, as well as an attempt to impose a coercive reality on them, especially during the olive harvest season.

Abu Rudeineh stressed that settler attacks are not isolated incidents but come in the context of the total war waged by the extremist Israeli government against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, the latest of which is the martyrdom of Palestinians, the wounding of hundreds, and the continued imposition of a total blockade.

Abu Rudeineh said that the West Bank is also witnessing continuous incursions into cities, villages, and camps, the raiding and vandalism of homes, the firing of live ammunition at Palestinians and farmers, and the seizure of land and property, under the protection provided by the occupation forces to the settlers, which encourages them to continue and expand their attacks.

He warned of the danger of this continued escalation and its repercussions on the security and stability of the region, holding the Israeli government fully responsible for the crimes and violations committed against the Palestinian people, and for the consequences of its policies that fuel violence, restrict the livelihoods of Palestinians, and target their presence on their land with the aim of forcing them to emigrate.

He affirmed that settlement in all its forms, and all unilateral Israeli measures aimed at imposing illegal facts on the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, are null and void, constitute a violation of international law and relevant international legitimacy resolutions, and do not create any right for the occupation in the Palestinian land.

Abu Rudeineh also affirmed that the Palestinian people, despite the escalation of attacks, attempts at displacement, and the imposition of facts by force, will remain committed to their land and their legitimate, inalienable national rights, foremost among them their right to freedom, independence, and the embodiment of their independent, sovereign Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
