((On the Edge of Survival)).. Gaza Stories Writing Life Amidst Death

With voices emanating from the heart of suffering, the book «On the Edge of Survival.. Voices from Gaza Writing Life Despite Everything», recently published by «Al-Aan Publishers and Distributors» (2026), is a collection of stories that document the details of life in Gaza under the weight of war, and transform pain, loss, and displacement into a literary testimony that preserves a part of the human memory.

The book includes 28 stories written by creators from Gaza, who evoke multiple faces of suffering, from stolen dreams and starvation, oppression and destruction, to loss and displacement, up to that faint hope that remains present in the face of death.

The book is dedicated to «Gaza children, born from the womb of suffering» while each story is preceded by an introductory section that includes a brief critical reading of its content, prepared by a cultural committee, to shed light on the narrative experiences and provide the reader with an entry into their worlds.

Among the stories included in the book is the story «Close to Death.. Far from Salvation» by Salman Osama Ahmed, which Mehdi Hanna describes as highlighting the harshness of war that «robs humans of their dreams and leaves them alone in the face of death»and noting that its open ending places the reader in a moment of suspended anticipation between salvation and loss.

In the story «Between Two Bags» by Hala Al-Zainati, Fatima Al-Mazrouei sees that the text does not present a traditional story, but rather a sensory experience that places the reader in a state of tension and uncertainty, and invites them to reflect on the meaning of life when it is surrounded by the possibilities of death from all sides.

As for the story «The Hand That Remained in the Air» by Abd Al-Karim Muhammad Abu Mustafa, it focuses on the human aspect that war numbers and maps often overlook, evoking the stolen face of childhood and the light of innocence extinguished by war.

In the story «Lucy's Tale in Gaza.. What Does the Taste of the Dead Look Like?!» by Nabil Al-Areeni, Maryam Al-Mulla discusses the idea of using technology to document the effects of war, through the character of Sami the inventor who creates a robotic dog to film the events witnessed in Gaza, in a narrative treatment that invests imagination to document what the eye cannot encompass.

The narrative experiences in the book are diverse, but they converge in an attempt to give a voice to human pain and transform the current Gaza experience into a literary memory that goes beyond direct documentation of events, capturing the fear, loss, questions, and deferred dreams left in the souls by the war.

The book is the result of a competition launched by the UAE-Palestine Friendship Club at the beginning of 2025 under the title «Stories from Gaza» with the aim of raising awareness of the human suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza and embodying it through literary stories, showcasing it through various media, and reaching the widest possible audience of the Arab and international public, alongside encouraging writers to participate and innovate.

The book includes the names of the winners of the competition at the beginning, forming a literary space for Gaza voices who chose to write, at a time when the war was trying to silence everything
