The MPs in the Field initiative continued its inspection tours, meeting today with the chairman of the Irbid Greater Municipality Committee, Imad Al-Azza, to discuss a number of service and developmental challenges and projects in Irbid city and its areas.
The initiative included MPs Abdul Nasser Al-Khasawneh, Tariq Bani Hani, Shaher Shatnawi, Abdul Halim Al-Anabneh, and Muhammad Zaki Bani Mallah, where during the meeting, a number of files that are of interest to citizens were reviewed, foremost of which are Al-Joureh Souk (the wedding market), Friday market, the University Street Tunnel, the development of main streets and parks, as well as investment opportunities and partnerships with the private sector.
MP Abdul Nasser Al-Khasawneh stressed the need for an urgent solution to Al-Joureh Souk, which was removed years ago without being rebuilt, causing damage to commercial shop owners, while the fate of the site remains unclear to this day. He called for bringing life back to the abandoned University Street Tunnel and finding a solution to the Friday market problem and providing a shared plot of land in cooperation with Bani Obaid Municipality to establish the market.
MP Tariq Bani Hani emphasized the need to pay attention to the main streets in Irbid, including Baghdad Street and Palestine Street, by allocating specific professions for them and organizing commercial activities in them, for example, designating one of the streets for organized car exhibitions, in addition to increasing attention to public parks and stressing the need for a suitable solution for the Friday market.
MP Muhammad Zaki Bani Mallah said that the recent amendments to the Local Administration Law, which allowed municipalities to enter into partnerships with the private sector, represent an opportunity to enhance investment and development in municipalities, noting that the separation of Bani Obaid Municipality from Irbid Greater Municipality has narrowed the investment space for the municipality, which requires a new comprehensive vision to address the repercussions of the matter.
He added that Irbid MPs had previously called for converting Irbid Greater Municipality into a municipality on the model of Amman Municipality, and that the province's MPs are pushing in this direction to enhance the municipality's ability to implement major developmental and investment projects.
MP Shaher Shatnawi praised the efforts made by Irbid Greater Municipality to improve the level of services in various areas, confirming that this has become a tangible reality, while MP Abdul Halim Al-Anabneh confirmed that Irbid Greater Municipality provides great services, considering Irbid as the center of the province, which requires supporting the municipality and enabling it to continue developing its services.
The MPs praised the performance of the municipality, Chairman of the Committee Al-Azza, and its achievements in various fields, especially in providing services, road paving and maintenance works, speeding up the processing of citizens' transactions, and developing services in the areas under its jurisdiction without the need for constant referral to the parent municipality, in addition to reducing the financial deficit and implementing major projects in the traffic field and working to develop the city center.
Chairman of the Irbid Greater Municipality Committee, Imad Al-Azza, said that the municipality had allocated one million dinars for the Al-Joureh Souk project, now called the 'Wedding Market', indicating that the municipality is currently working on preparing the designs for the project in preparation for its implementation.
Al-Azza added that the municipality also allocated one million dinars for the rehabilitation and paving of the Hawra road, where the tender has been issued, and implementation is scheduled to begin in the coming days, stressing the importance of the road as it is one of the vital roads, starting from the Barda intersection to the new traffic light after the Sirah-Hawra intersection, as part of the municipality's plan to improve the infrastructure of vital roads in the city.
He pointed out that the municipality has carried out a number of expropriations on the historical hill of Irbid with the aim of implementing a park and a breathing space for the local community, in addition to the intention to carry out other expropriations in the jewelers' market and Harat Al-Jada area as part of the city center development project to preserve the heritage, identity, memory, and history of the ancient city as part of the Jordanian narrative for future generations, in addition to implementing the largest traffic project on Al-Thaqafa Square by converting it into a smart signal.
Al-Azza confirmed that the amended Local Administration Law provides an opportunity for municipalities to implement investment projects in partnership with the private sector, which will benefit the municipalities and local communities, noting that the municipality is working to invest these opportunities to enhance local development.
He stressed that the municipality is striving to improve and enhance its services in various areas and expedite the processing of citizens' transactions without delay, confirming its readiness to listen to any observations or complaints and address them promptly.
The MPs of the 'MPs in the Field' initiative had met with the Chairman of the Bani Obaid Municipality Committee, Riyad Al-Jarrah, in the presence of Vice President Fatima Al-Saadi, where a number of service issues were discussed, with a particular focus on the need to find and provide a suitable plot of land for the establishment of the Friday market.
Al-Jarrah confirmed that Bani Obaid Municipality is working in partnership with Irbid Greater Municipality to find a solution to the Friday market problem and is currently studying a number of options and alternatives, indicating that the municipality is considering the possibility of moving the market from its current location to another location that serves the interests of citizens and traders and contributes to organizing traffic and services in the area.
