Minister of Environment participates in the Leaders' Summit of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity

Representing His Majesty King Abdullah II, Minister of Environment Ayman Suleiman participated in the Leaders' Summit held as part of the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), hosted by the Republic of Armenia, with the participation of heads of state, officials, and representatives of stakeholders dedicated to protecting biodiversity and conserving ecosystems.

During his speech, Suleiman conveyed His Majesty's greetings and wishes for the success of the summit, emphasizing the importance of translating international commitments into practical actions and tangible results that contribute to achieving the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, amid mounting environmental challenges, foremost among them biodiversity loss, climate change, water scarcity, and land degradation.

He stressed that protecting biodiversity is a strategic priority for Jordan, as it is directly linked to water and food security, the sustainability of natural resources, and livelihoods. He pointed to the Kingdom's efforts in 2026 to update the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, prepare the seventh national report and the monitoring and evaluation framework, alongside working to develop a national biodiversity finance plan through the Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN), aimed at enhancing the mobilization of financial resources necessary for implementing national priorities.

In a related context, Jordan participated in the roundtable session dedicated to financing the future and aligning financial flows with nature-positive development, where it emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships between governments, international financial institutions, and the private sector, integrating biodiversity considerations into sectoral policies and strategies, and directing investments toward activities that achieve measurable positive impacts on nature.

He also stressed the need to review the incentive system to promote positive incentives supporting ecological restoration and sustainable production, and to explore innovative financing tools, including nature conservation funds, green and blue bonds, and sukuk, while taking into account national priorities and environmental and social safeguards.

It is worth noting that Jordan's participation in the summit comes within the framework of its efforts to enhance regional and international cooperation, and to support global efforts to halt biodiversity loss and restore ecosystems by strengthening political will, providing sustainable financing, and building capacities, thus contributing to achieving global goals, preserving natural resources, and ensuring their sustainability.

National efforts in this field are also highlighted through strengthening the management of nature reserves and protecting ecosystems, particularly in light of the recent inclusion of the Aqaba Marine Reserve on the UNESCO list, which reflects the importance of preserving marine biodiversity and enhancing the sustainability of natural resources.
