King Hussein International Airport in Aqaba received, last Friday evening, the first direct and regular flights coming from the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi, operated by Royal Jordanian Airlines, twice weekly, to inaugurate a new direct air route between the two cities.
Dr. Thabet Al-Nabulsi, Commissioner of Tourism and Youth Affairs at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, confirmed that the arrival of the first flights from Abu Dhabi represents an important milestone for the partnership between the Authority and Royal Jordanian Airlines, noting that the inauguration of the routes with Abu Dhabi and Riyadh expands the direct air connectivity of Aqaba with the Gulf markets.
He added that the regularity of the flights provides flexible travel options for visitors, including short trips during weekends, pointing out that the expansion of the air connectivity network allows Aqaba to reach a wider range of visitors and enhances its ability to offer an integrated tourism experience that combines the city's maritime features, the golden triangle in Wadi Rum and Petra, and supports the sustainability of tourism activity throughout the year.
According to the operational program, direct flights between Aqaba and both Abu Dhabi and Riyadh operate twice weekly for each destination, while the program includes the inauguration of a direct route with the Russian capital, Moscow, on October 25th, twice weekly, alongside increasing the number of flights on the Cairo-Aqaba route to 3 flights per week.
The arrival of the Abu Dhabi flight comes a day after the airport received the first regular flights from Riyadh, indicating the actual start of the new air connectivity system with the Gulf markets after the promotional tour carried out by the Authority in cooperation with Royal Jordanian Airlines in Abu Dhabi and Riyadh to introduce Aqaba and its tourism product and promote the new route.
