Jordanian director Lara Daames won the gold medal in the documentary category at the 53rd Student Academy Awards for her film "The Last People of Petra," during a ceremony held in Toronto, Canada, on September 14.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had announced in August that the film was among the winners in the documentary category, before revealing the medal rankings during the awards ceremony, where Daames' film took gold, while Jason Elliott's "I Want to Live" won silver, and Arjun Fisher's "Artificial Love" took bronze.
"The Last People of Petra" sheds light on the life of the Bdoul community in Petra and the changes that have occurred in their lives as the archaeological city developed and transformed into a tourist destination.
This year's Student Academy Awards competition saw the participation of 2,972 films from 894 universities and colleges around the world, with the awards ceremony held for the first time as part of the Toronto International Film Festival.
By winning gold, "The Last People of Petra" has become eligible to compete for the 99th Academy Awards in the Short Documentary category, alongside all the films that won Student Academy Awards this year.
