Israeli army abuses elderly Palestinian in Hebron and injures him in the West Bank

An elderly Palestinian sustained injuries and bruises after being abused by Israeli soldiers while attempting to reach his home in the city of Hebron in the southern occupied West Bank, in an area evacuated by the army since Friday.

A widely circulated video showed part of the assault by Israeli soldiers on the elderly Hijazi Shawar Al-Tamimi, the mukhtar (head) of the Al-Tamimi family, as he appeared leaning on his cane and trying to speak to the soldiers before one of them pushed him and kicked him several times, leading to his later hospitalization with injuries.

Although the video showed a single soldier assaulting the elderly man, Al-Tamimi said that a number of soldiers beat him across various parts of his body, including his head.

While the video shows a single soldier assaulting him, Al-Tamimi stated that a number of soldiers beat him across various parts of his body, including his head.

He added, according to the circulated footage, that he went to his home from which he was forced out without anyone stopping him, and suddenly a number of soldiers intercepted him about 100 meters from his house and prevented him from proceeding.

He continued that he told the soldiers he was sick, suffered from diabetes, had nine stents in his arteries, and needed his medication, but they insisted on blocking him without specifying a time for his return. When he asked them to show the prohibition order to appeal it in the High Court, they began abusing him.

He explained that the soldiers used profanity, while two of them struck him in the chest, foot, and head, forcing him to return by the use of force. He walked back on his feet but later found himself in the hospital, indicating that he had fainted.

On Friday, the Israeli army imposed a blockade on the city of Hebron as part of a military operation following an attack carried out by two Palestinians that resulted in the death of two Israeli soldiers and the injuries of 3 others, before the army subsequently killed the attackers.

During the first two days, the operation witnessed the forced displacement of hundreds of Palestinians from the Ein Deir Bahah neighborhood in the western part of the city, alongside the demolition of homes, facilities, and commercial shops, the destruction of infrastructure, and the conversion of some homes into military barracks where Israeli flags were raised.

On Saturday evening, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz admitted that about 2,000 Palestinians were forcibly displaced from their homes in Hebron, stating that they will not be able to return before the dismantling of what he described as the "Hamas infrastructure" in the city, according to his expression.

Local sources told Anadolu Agency that "the city is devoid of Hamas infrastructure," while observers and Palestinian officials pointed out that the targets in the city under the "retaliatory" operation are civilian homes.
