The Director of the Irbid Agriculture Directorate, Dr. Abdul Hafez Abu Arabi, confirmed that the olives being picked at the moment by farmers and citizens are only for pickling ("Rasic") purposes.
Abu Arabi explained that it is still too early to pick olives intended for oil extraction; this is because the oil production percentage within the fruits is still low during this period of the season, which would result in a loss of the expected oil quantity for the farmer if they were pressed early.
Abu Arabi called on farmers and citizens across the governorate to wait and start picking fruits intended for pressing in conjunction with the official opening date of the presses, expected on the fifteenth of October next, to ensure the fruits are fully ripe and to obtain high quality and feasible extraction rates of olive oil.
The Director of Agriculture also urged everyone to consult all the directives and technical guidelines published and broadcast by the agriculture directorates and agricultural centers spread across the various districts of the governorate, and to adhere to the recommended methods for picking and transporting fruits, to ensure the protection of the national product and to achieve the highest economic benefit for farmers during this blessed season.
