The Dean of Pharmacists of Jordan, Dr. Zaid Al-Kilani, inaugurated the Smoking Cessation Support Unit at the Akdema Research Center as part of a partnership between the Syndicate and the Center and within the framework of the 'Smoke-Free Generation' initiative aimed at enhancing prevention and providing practical support to those wishing to quit smoking.
Al-Kilani emphasized the important role of pharmacists in prevention, health education, and supporting those wishing to quit, noting that combating smoking is a national responsibility that requires the integration of roles of health, professional, and educational institutions and the provision of practical and sustainable services to those wishing to quit.
He added that the Syndicate is committed to supporting initiatives that translate awareness into tangible programs and services that contribute to protecting children and youth, reducing the spread of smoking, and enhancing community health.
The founder and director of the 'Smoke-Free Generation' initiative and a member of the Syndicate Council, Dr. Maryam Awad, said that the inauguration of the unit represents a practical step towards moving from awareness to providing support to those wishing to quit, noting that the results of the surveys showed an increase in awareness among students in a number of indicators from about 80% to about 90%.
The unit provides counseling and support services through qualified pharmacists in tobacco addiction treatment and in cooperation with the Jordanian Psychiatric Association to provide psychological support during the cessation journey.
Akdema Center emphasized the importance of the partnership, noting that converting an area that was designated for smoking into an area for supporting cessation embodies the transition from a smoking environment to a supportive environment for health and prevention.
The Syndicate valued the efforts of the partners and supporters of the initiative in supporting national efforts to combat smoking and enhance prevention and cessation.
