'Ilo Ilo'.. The Family's Struggle with the Economic Crisis in Shouman Cinema

The Cinema Committee at the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation will screen the Singaporean film 'Ilo Ilo' by director Anthony Chen, tomorrow Tuesday, at 6:30 PM, in the cinema hall at the Foundation's headquarters in Jabal Amman.

The film, which caught attention when it was shown at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013 and won the 'Golden Camera' award usually given to first cinematic works, tells a human and social story that seems simple on the surface but contains many meanings, feelings, and subtle details.

The events of the film take place in the 1990s, amidst the economic crisis that affected Southeast Asia, and directly impacted the lives of the middle class and the fates of its members. The work follows a family consisting of a father, a mother, and a child aged nine, while the mother is pregnant and the father faces his professional and family responsibilities.

The child forms a central axis of the events, as the parents suffer from his mischievous and problematic behavior at home, school, and the neighborhood, to the point where the school administration threatens to expel him. In response, the family decides to hire a Filipino maid to help with the child's care, especially since the family's financial situation allows it at the beginning of the events.

However, the family's life begins to change gradually as the economic crisis worsens; the father loses his job but hides it from his wife and starts looking for a new opportunity, ready to accept any job, no matter how simple. Meanwhile, the wife, who works as a secretary in a company, faces increasing concerns about her professional future, especially with the assignment of printing books for the dismissal of some employees in the company.

On the other hand, the film reveals the child's inner world and his secret hobby, where he collects newspaper clippings that include winning lottery ticket numbers and tries to analyze them and predict the numbers that could win. This hobby goes beyond the limits of play, later becoming a deep symbol of the characters' dreams and their attempts to find a way out of their difficult circumstances.

As for the Filipino maid, who left her child in her country and came to work in search of a source of income, she succeeds over time in building a special relationship with the child and gaining his trust, while she has to work extra during her weekly vacation without the knowledge of the family she works for.

Through these details, director Anthony Chen presents a picture of a family whose daily life seems stable but moves amidst circumstances similar to a'minefield', where any small event can upset their balance. The family in the film becomes a microcosm of an entire society, living under the weight of economic and social transformations.

The film is characterized by a quiet dramatic structure that relies on small details, revealing what human relationships hide in terms of feelings, fears, and desires. It also highlights the director's skill in drawing characters and writing the script, whether they are family members or the maid who represents a model for millions of migrant workers seeking a better life and a source of income.

'Ilo Ilo' won several awards, including the Best Screenplay Award at the Golden Horse Festival in Taiwan, as well as the Best Film and Best Director Awards, and won the Silver Stallion Award for Best Narrative Film at the Dubai International Film Festival.
