Guterres regrets Washington's refusal to allow Abbas to attend UN General Assembly meetings

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed on Friday his regret over the United States' refusal to grant Palestinian officials, most notably Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, visas to attend the UN General Assembly meetings next week.

Guterres' spokesperson said, "The Secretary-General deeply regrets the US announcement extending sanctions that prevent members of the Palestine Liberation Organization and Palestinian Authority officials from participating in UN meetings."

The United States announced on Thursday its refusal to grant Abbas and the Palestinian delegation visas, for the second consecutive year.

Only members of the Palestinian mission to the United Nations will be able to attend the annual meetings of the General Assembly.
