Greater Amman Municipality: Removing obstructions from sidewalks and streets is an ongoing regulatory effort

Obstructions scattered across the streets and sidewalks of the capital, Amman, take many forms, including unlicensed stalls, kiosks, carts, and makeshift shelters, as well as barriers and cones used to reserve parking spaces, such as concrete and plastic barriers, planters, and stones, in addition to some trees that impede pedestrian movement.

According to the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), these violations are concentrated primarily in commercial and vital streets and areas, downtown, and in front of shops, establishments, and locations that experience high traffic and pedestrian density, as well as sites about which complaints are received from citizens and merchants.

The Municipality confirmed that the removal of 140 obstructions within 48 hours does not represent the daily removal rate, explaining that removing obstructions and reopening sidewalks and streets to their users is carried out as part of an ongoing regulatory effort through field tours and joint campaigns executed by the Department of Random Sales Control and Removal.

It indicated that the joint and intensive campaigns are intended to bolster the daily efforts of the Municipality's staff, especially in locations that witness a high density of violations or are the subject of complaints from citizens and merchants.

The Municipality explained that it monitors sites in the field after removing obstructions and tracks any recurrence of violations to take legal action against violators, in addition to receiving and following up on citizens' complaints in the field.

It added that joint campaigns are carried out periodically and continuously in coordination with security authorities, while the Department of Random Sales Control and Removal conducts campaigns in various areas of the capital, with a focus on vital locations.
