The Greater Amman Municipality confirmed on Saturday that the sidewalk is a right for pedestrians, and that the rehabilitation works aim to provide a safer and easier environment for mobility, especially for children, the elderly, and people with disabilities, and to reduce their need to use the street due to obstacles on the sidewalks.
The Amman Municipality continues its work to rehabilitate sidewalks and remove illegal obstructions and obstacles in residential and commercial areas, ensuring safe and connected pedestrian paths, and improving the level of safety and quality of life in the capital.
The works include rehabilitating old sidewalks and improving the connectivity of pedestrian paths, along with studying sites that allow technical and regulatory conditions to widen sidewalks, providing suitable space for movement and improving safety levels.
The Municipality is also working to remove illegal obstructions, including vehicles parked on sidewalks, barriers, stalls, and commercial expansions, and the use of pedestrian paths as private parking or valet services.
Regarding trees and plants that obstruct pedestrian movement, the Municipality confirmed that they are dealt with according to a technical assessment of each site, with priority given to preserving them when possible, pruning obstructive branches when pruning is sufficient to secure the path, and relocating trees or plants when their condition allows, with removal only in cases where a safe path cannot be provided by other means.
The works also include rehabilitating obstacle sites after their removal to match the nature of the sidewalk, and considering the selection of planting sites and appropriate tree types for available spaces when creating new or developing sidewalks.
The Municipality emphasized the application of the sidewalk system and procedures adopted for illegal obstructions, and monitoring sites to prevent the recurrence of encroachments, confirming that using sidewalks for purposes other than those intended, which obstructs pedestrian movement or endangers their safety, is a violation that requires treatment.
In the context of regulating the use of public spaces, the Municipality also monitors cases of reserving public parking or preventing citizens from using them in front of some shops and establishments, taking into account private and designated parking and traffic restrictions in place.
The Municipality confirmed its continued commitment to informing citizens about work sites, implementation stages, and achieved results, and following up on received observations and reports, contributing to the sustainability of improvements and maintaining safe and accessible sidewalks for pedestrians.
