Frequent cravings for sugar.. health signals that should not be ignored

Russian nutritionist Daria Rusakova warned that intense and frequent cravings for sweets may be linked to health problems, including blood sugar regulation disorders, in addition to psychological and behavioral factors that affect appetite.

In an interview with the "Vechernyaya Moskva" newspaper, Rusakova explained that craving sweets may appear in some people with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, coinciding with disturbances in blood glucose levels.

She said that fluctuations in sugar levels may be accompanied by symptoms such as dizziness, weakness, and nausea, noting that some people may resort to eating sweets in the belief that it will help them regain their energy.

She added that the frequent desire to consume sugar may also be linked to psychological state, particularly constant stress and low mood. Some turn to sweet foods in search of comfort or to improve their mood, as a result of the association of sweets with reward and feelings of pleasure since childhood.

The expert pointed out that some cases of craving sweets may coincide with a deficiency in certain nutrients, including some minerals and B-group vitamins, and dietary habits may also contribute to increased consumption among people who suffer from being overweight or obese.

Regarding nutrition, Rusakova indicated that added sugar provides energy without offering significant amounts of vitamins and minerals, calling for a focus on natural carbohydrate sources, such as vegetables and fruits, within a balanced diet.

When should you pay attention?

The desire to eat sweets alone does not mean having diabetes or a deficiency in vitamins and minerals, as it can be influenced by multiple factors, such as hunger, lack of sleep, stress, and daily habits. However, if it is accompanied by excessive thirst, frequent urination, or unusual fatigue, it is best to consult a doctor and perform the necessary tests to evaluate blood sugar levels.
