Farmers' Union: Farmers bear 75-80 Dinars to produce a can of oil

The Director General of the General Union of Jordanian Farmers, Mahmoud Al-Awar, said that the cost of a can of olive oil for the farmer ranges between 75 and 80 dinars, warning against offers of local olive oil at prices ranging between 50 and 60 dinars, which he described as unreasonable and impossible compared to the cost of production.

Al-Awar called on citizens to buy olive oil for the current season from reliable sources, to avoid falling victim to fraud operations that some traders activate at this time of year.

He said that some citizens fall victim to people claiming to be farmers and marketers of olive oil, warning of the presence of people around the presses who claim to have pressed their crop and are selling the oil as fresh produce.

Al-Awar confirmed that olive presses will not start working until mid-this month, by decision of the Ministry of Agriculture.

He called for a mechanism to regulate Tunisian olive oil, which is widespread in local markets, to avoid refilling it in new sheets and selling it as a local product.
