Gadi Eisenkot, one of the most prominent opposition candidates in Israel, accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday of seeking to delegitimize the election results, after accusing Arab parties of receiving foreign funding that allowed them to achieve an unprecedented result.
Eisenkot added that the days when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu controlled institutions to serve his personal interests are over.
The head of the Israeli Democrats party, Yair Golan, said he met with Eisenkot, confirming that they are partners in the commitment to ensuring a better future.
Golan added that he is determined to do whatever it takes to seize the "historic opportunity" and bring about change.
The results of the ongoing count showed the Netanyahu camp leading the opposition led by Gadi Eisenkot, without having the majority necessary to form a government. According to data from the Central Elections Committee, the results after counting 97% of the votes showed that the Netanyahu camp obtained 53 seats, compared to 48 for the opposition and 19 for the two Arab lists.
The Israeli Central Elections Committee stated that the Knesset elections were held in accordance with the law and that there is no basis for claims regarding a systematic compromise of their integrity.
Netanyahu, the longest-serving prime minister in Israel's history, is seeking to formulate options that would allow him to remain in power, despite the decline of the camp he leads in legislative elections that did not produce a clear majority.
