Economic and Social Council discusses the future of academic streams in General Secondary Education

The Educational Policies Committee at the Economic and Social Council discussed, in its third meeting this year on Saturday, its work priorities for the coming period, primarily the evaluation of the newly introduced "academic streams" in General Secondary Education and their impact on university admissions.

The Council President, Dr. Musa Shtaiwi, in the presence of Secretary-General Nathir Al-Awamleh and committee members, pointed out that the committee discussed the reality of the education sector and the developments it has witnessed, most notably the merger of the Ministries of Education and Higher Education into one ministry, and the implementation of academic streams in General Secondary Education.

He explained that the Council is evaluating these streams impartially by studying their pros, cons, and challenges, proposing solutions and improvement measures, and assessing their suitability for the needs of students and the labor market.

Regarding the accreditation and quality file, the President of the Accreditation and Quality Assurance Commission, Dr. Dhafer Al-Sarayrah, said that the Commission's law for 2026 has been approved but has not yet entered into force, and that the Commission is currently reviewing best international practices. He added that the Commission has held meetings regarding accreditation standards for schools and nurseries with entities in Saudi Arabia, Hungary, and Australia, and is preparing to meet with entities in Oman, the United States, and Canada.

He indicated that after completing the review of international experiences, the Commission will organize meetings with local entities in the north, center, and south to listen to their observations.

The meeting recommended that the committee prepare a paper to evaluate the newly introduced academic streams, including the Vocational and Technical Education (BTEC) system, their repercussions on General Secondary Education and university admissions, and to develop an initial concept for dialogues to be held by the Council with the Commission, with the participation of experts from various regions, to evaluate and improve the final standards for accrediting schools and nurseries, as the committee chair, Dr. Safa Shweihat, will prepare the initial concept for the dialogue paper.
