Calls to convert the horse clinic in Petra into a hospital

More than three hundred and fifty-three working horses in Petra, and hundreds of others, receive veterinary care services at the horse clinic affiliated with the Ministry of Agriculture, which is the only one of its kind in the south of the Kingdom.

The existence of a specialized horse clinic in Petra comes due to the city's tourism specificity and the importance of horses in transporting tourists along the main tourist path in the archaeological site, which extends from the city gate to the beginning of the Siq archaeological landmark.

The Director of Agriculture in Petra, Engineer Akef Al-Thunaibat, confirms that the clinic provides medical examinations and veterinary medicines for horses, and also provides deworming treatments and parasite control of all kinds, through a specialized medical staff.

Al-Thunaibat indicated that the clinic provides its services to all residential communities in Petra and neighboring areas, and to various horses, whether they are working in transporting tourists or others.

Al-Thunaibat said that the clinic, in addition to its therapeutic role, provides guidance services to horse breeders, enabling them to improve the conditions of their care.

He added that during the recent visit of the Ministry's Secretary-General to Petra, the development of the clinic and its transformation into a specialized center for horses was discussed, given Petra's fame for having hundreds of horses of various breeds.

Veterinarian Aram Al-Nusrat explains that the medical staff at the clinic exerts all its efforts in providing the necessary services, care, and medicines for the horses, and that daily services are provided to treat horses for wounds and perform major surgeries for some of their cases.

The clinic's services and its medical staff received praise from the residents, who at the same time demanded the necessity of expanding the clinic and converting it into the first specialized hospital for horse care, given Petra's fame for horse breeding and their continuous work in transporting tourists to archaeological sites.

Ahmed Al-Hasanat, a horse breeder, demanded the importance of having a specialized hospital to treat horses and provide medical care for them in the Petra region, while at the same time appreciating the efforts made by the medical staff of the clinic. Ibrahim Al-Shamaseen, a horse breeder, agrees with him, finding that the spread of horse breeding in Petra requires the existence of a specialized hospital for them, capable of examining and treating their various medical conditions.

Horses have been and still are a part of the history and heritage of the Rose City, and the people of the region are famous for breeding them, while they receive the attention and admiration of Petra's visitors coming from all over the world.
