Arrest of pilots in Libya suspected of flying a plane "while under the influence of alcohol"

The Public Prosecution in Libya announced on Wednesday that it had ordered the arrest of two pilots suspected of flying a private plane "while under the influence of alcohol", after their plane deviated from the runway at Misrata Airport, in an incident that resulted in no casualties.

The Public Prosecution did not disclose the identity of the pilots, but a Libyan satellite channel reported that the pilot was German and his co-pilot was Turkish.

Reports indicated that the private plane, operated by a company based in Turkey, deviated from the runway at Misrata Airport upon landing on Monday, and then caught fire.

The TV channel reported that the only passenger was a Turkish flight attendant.

The Public Prosecution said that the investigator confronted the pilot and his co-pilot "for flying it under the influence of alcohol" and "decided to detain the accused in custody".

The Public Prosecution pointed out that the accused posed "a real danger to their own safety and the plane, a potential danger to the airport and its users, and the general safety of the airspace through which it passed".

It pointed out that the investigator "continued to complete the investigation into the incident in accordance with the relevant national and international rules".

Footage circulated on the Internet showed the entire plane, except the cockpit, engulfed in flames.
