"Aqaba Arabic Calligraphy Competition" launches its sixth season in honor of calligrapher Yasser Al-Jarabah

The Aqaba Directorate of Culture and the Amwaj Association for Culture and Arts have launched the sixth season of the Aqaba Arabic Calligraphy Competition, with the aim of preserving Arab and Islamic heritage, encouraging youth to practice the art of Arabic calligraphy and develop their skills, and strengthening the presence of this art in the Jordanian cultural scene.

Director of Culture in Aqaba, Tariq Al-Budour, said that the competition seeks to develop the talents of young people and motivate them to take an interest in Arabic calligraphy as a component of Arab and Islamic cultural identity, in addition to protecting its artistic and aesthetic value and enhancing Aqaba's position among Jordanian cities that sponsor this art.

The 2026 edition bears the name of calligrapher Yasser Al-Jarabah, in recognition of his artistic career and contributions to the field of Arabic calligraphy, as well as his role in organizing the competition since its inception, which has contributed to its continuity and the development of its cultural presence.

For his part, the President of the Amwaj Association for Culture and Arts, Sami Al-Maaytah, explained that the competition is distinguished by a competitive mechanism that allows contestants to write directly in front of the judging panel after being provided with writing supplies, allowing for a direct assessment of their practical skills and artistic level.

Participation is limited to Jordanians, covering four types of Arabic scripts: Thuluth, Naskh, Diwani, and Ruq'ah, according to specific texts for each type, while Aqaba will host the finalists for evaluation before the judging panel.

Al-Maaytah invited those wishing to participate to send their resumes and samples of their artwork via the competition's WhatsApp number 0795240750, to calligrapher Abdel Fattah Al-Sharbati.

The launch of the sixth edition in Al-Jarabah's name comes as a tribute to his contributions to serving the art of Arabic calligraphy at the local, Arab, and international levels, including his participation as a guest of honor at the Cairo International Forum for Arabic Calligraphy, organized by the Cultural Development Fund under the patronage of the Egyptian Ministry of Culture.
