Al-Salt: History and Civilization.. A National Day Celebrating the Memory of the Place, the People, and the Legacy of Generations

The city of Al-Salt is preparing next Saturday to host the activities of the "Al-Salt: History and Civilization" National Day, an initiative by the Association of Christians of the Levant in Jordan, in partnership with official and civil institutions and community actors, in a national celebration that highlights the city's ancient history, its civilizational, urban, and social uniqueness, and the contributions of its people to the journey of building the Jordanian state and shaping its national identity.

This initiative comes in the context of community engagement with the Jordanian Narrative project launched by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, and in harmony with the national efforts led by the Ministry of Culture aimed at documenting Jordanian memory, enhancing awareness of the history of cities and their civilizational and human heritage, and consolidating the values of belonging and pride in the collective national identity.

A City Telling Its History

This participatory event gains special importance from the historical and civilizational status of the city of Al-Salt, which was inscribed in 2021 on the UNESCO World Heritage List under the title "Al-Salt, the Place of Tolerance and Urban Hospitality," in recognition of its exceptional heritage value and its distinct urban and social fabric that reflects a long and unique history of unity, diversity, and mutual respect.

Al-Salt is not merely heritage buildings and distinctive stone facades, but an integrated urban and human fabric, where houses, stairways, alleys, and markets intertwine with people's lives and memories to tell the story of a city whose identity was formed through generations and maintained its uniqueness within Jordanian national history.

Five Paths to Explore the Memory of the Place

The National Day includes a diverse cultural and heritage program, featuring ten historical and heritage paths that allow visitors to wander among Al-Salt's landmarks, old houses, neighborhoods, and markets, and to explore the stories associated with the place and its inhabitants, as well as the rich social and cultural memory the city stores.

The program also highlights the importance of preserving architectural heritage and repurposing historical buildings in a way that safeguards their identity and gives them renewed life, contributing to the revitalization of cultural tourism, supporting the local economy, and providing job opportunities and sources of income for the city's residents, thereby strengthening the relationship between heritage protection and achieving sustainable development.

Living Heritage... A Memory Passed Down Through Generations

The celebration is not limited to urban and material heritage, but extends to intangible heritage that forms the city's soul and social identity, through segments that evoke the traditional Al-Salti wedding, along with its accompanying chants, local dialect, hospitality, and authentic customs and traditions.

These activities aim to present heritage as a living practice passed down through generations, not just images from the past, and to provide an opportunity for young people to learn about their city's legacy and participate in preserving and passing it on to the future.

A National Partnership That Extends Beyond the Celebration Day

The Association of Christians of the Levant in Jordan emphasized that the initiative stems from the belief that preserving heritage and safeguarding national memory is a collective responsibility that requires the concerted efforts of official and civil institutions, the local community, researchers, and youth, and that the choice of Al-Salt was based on its historical and civilizational uniqueness and what it represents as a model of diversity, coexistence, and partnership among the components of Jordanian society.

The goals of the initiative do not end with the conclusion of the National Day activities, as the participating parties look forward to formulating practical recommendations and proposals that serve as a starting point for sustainable cultural, documentation, and heritage programs and initiatives that enhance the protection of local memory, support the employment of heritage in development and tourism, and open the way for similar initiatives that celebrate the uniqueness of Jordanian cities and the contributions of their people to national history.

An Open Invitation to Celebrate Al-Salt

The Association of Christians of the Levant in Jordan, along with official and civil institutions and the people of Al-Salt, invite all Jordanians and those interested in history, culture, and heritage to participate on Saturday, October 24, 2026, to discover the city's landmarks and stories, and to learn about its civilizational and human legacy, in a day that combines knowledge with pride in the land and the people.
