The Director General of the General Union of Jordanian Farmers, Engineer Mahmoud Al-Awaran, warned of the dangers of open agricultural ponds, especially those set up near homes and residential areas, calling on farmers to take sufficient preventive measures to reduce accidents of falling into them, especially among children.
Al-Awaran said that farmers resort to establishing exposed ponds with the aim of collecting water, whether rainwater during the winter season or water allocated to them, for direct or supplementary irrigation, explaining that the high cost of production and low prices push some farmers to settle for simple measures when establishing these ponds.
He explained that some farmers are content with placing plastic at the bottom of the pond without providing the necessary means of protection, while the matter requires the establishment of a fence and a net and placing clear warning signs, so that they are visible to children, adults, and workers in the farms.
He pointed out that the nature of the soil surrounding the ponds is sometimes loose and easy to slip, in addition to the fact that the plastic used in lining the pond increases the likelihood of slipping and falling, which necessitates the provision of appropriate means of protection around it.
Al-Awaran attributed the failure of some farmers to provide safety measures to their high cost, especially since some ponds are used for one or two seasons, which makes the establishment of fixed protection facilities a costly matter for the farmer.
He called on farmers to take safety measures into account when establishing agricultural ponds, by establishing a protective fence and placing warning signs, in addition to providing means of warning during night hours, such as lighting or reflectors, to reduce the risk of falling into them.
